[Katey Boal] What this is it’s a partnership project between The Highland Council, The National Trust for Scotland and The Forestry Commission and Balloch Community Council. And what we’re doing is we are linking up the communities of Culloden, Balloch and Smithton with the Battlefield and telling the wider story of the Battle of Culloden. It’s really important to make sure that the centre itself connects with the communities that live around it and making sure that people understand the significance of the battle, and the story of the battle and the impact that this battle had not only on the local people, but throughout Britain and the rest of the world.

A new path on Culloden Battle site
[Mairi Rodgers - Presenter] More than two hundred thousand pounds have been spent on improving the Culloden Battlefield. The National Trust of Scotland, amongst other groups, have created new walkways and they aim to make stronger links between the area itself and the surrounding towns. As part of the project, wooden benches are being built with Gaelic poetry written on them. Here’s Donald Lamont.
[Donald Lamont – Reporter] All over Scotland today, the mist slows people down, but at Culloden Battlefield it adds to the feeling of the place. The Culloden Battlefield Centre attracts thousands of tourists every year, but in spite of this, they are always looking for new ways to improve the area. Work is about to start on a new route of nine kilometres in length, around the battlefield. The project will cost more than two hundred thousand pounds with most of the money coming from the group LEADER.
[Katey Boal] What this is it’s a partnership project between The Highland Council, The National Trust for Scotland and The Forestry Commission and Balloch Community Council. And what we’re doing is we are linking up the communities of Culloden, Balloch and Smithton with the Battlefield and telling the wider story of the Battle of Culloden. It’s really important to make sure that the centre itself connects with the communities that live around it and making sure that people understand the significance of the battle, and the story of the battle and the impact that this battle had not only on the local people, but throughout Britain and the rest of the world.
[Donald Lamont – Reporter] As part of the project, wooden benches are to be built with pieces of poetry written on them. A famous Gaelic poet was selected to do this work.
[Aonghas MacNeacail - Poet] The work that I have to do is prepare very small snippets of poetry which will go on each bench and a piece of explanation text and I have been making my way around to get a feel of the site for myself in order to do that, with research on the information that is around in libraries and things, to have more of an understanding of what it was like.
