Developments on the railway

[Iain MacLean - Presenter] We’ll move on now and Network Rail are going to spend more than thirty five billion pounds on the country’s lines before 2019, they say. They hope that this will improve things for travellers, but there is a warning as well that fares will go up to pay for the projects to reach their targets. Iain MacInnes has more.

[Iain MacInnes – Reporter] Millions of pounds are to be spent to bring new life to the country’s rail lines. Network Rail’s business plan, for the years between 2014 and 2019, promises services will be faster and more reliable with more seats for travellers and better facilities for tourists.

[Iain MacInnes – Reporter] Network Rail maintain that these will be the biggest changes on Britain’s railway lines since the Victorian age. Amongst what is planned, 170,000 extra seats will be offered to travellers. More than six hundred million pounds will be spent on protecting railway lines from floods and thousands of electricity lines will be laid all over the country. The question is, though, where will the money come from?

[Iain MacInnes – Reporter] They have issued a warning that savings will be made and fares will increased to reach these targets and there is a concern now amongst travellers that they will be the ones paying for this modernisation.

[Coinneach Combe] That’s the thing that is worrying me about these plans. They expect that the number of people that use these trains will continue to rise in the years to come, although they expect to increase the fares. But, that has been happening for years and I don’t think people will stand for that and they’ll start to look at other modes of transport instead of the trains, if they continue to get so expensive.

[Iain MacInnes – Reporter] Four billion pounds will be spent in Scotland between Inverness and Aberdeen and on the lines in the Borders. But, a large sum will be spent on the line between Glasgow and Edinburgh, something that does not please everyone.

[Coinneach Combe] I think they need to spend money on almost every line in Scotland. It is not so long ago that we had many more lines in Scotland than we have now and we also need to look at local lines, lines between Glasgow and Edinburgh and also the lines that link Scotland and England, but we need development on everything there is, in my opinion.

[Iain MacInnes – Reporter] Travelling groups have welcomed the aims of Netwrok Rail for redevelopment of the lines, but the question is if the cost of the work is going to fall on travellers, will they be so satisfied then? Iain MacInnes. BBC An Là, at Inverness Railway Station.
