A singing class in Castle Douglas
[Alasdair Fraser - Presenter] More then, now on the growth of Gaelic in the south-east of Scotland. Yesterday, we heard that there was a playgroup based in Dumfries. Well, it would appear that there is a big interest in the language in the area and they are trying to set up choir too. They have had a singing class in Castle Douglas for a year and as Caitriana Deeprose reports, they are thinking about taking a choir to the Mod.
[Caitriana Deeprose - Reporter] This singing class in Castle Douglas has been going for a year with about twenty going each month and it is clear that it is popular.
[Mary Kiely] They have a big interest in Gaelic and they come every month to sing and learn Gaelic songs.
[William Shepherd] It’s the friendship and the comradeship that’s here. There’s something about singing that brings you together.
[Jeanette Rodgers] There was plenty of Gaelic in Galloway, as they say. There was plenty of Gaelic – it’s a long time since they were speaking Gaelic and it’s good to hear it again.
[Caitriana Deeprose - Reporter] A woman who goes has set up a choir in Stranraer and she hopes that people from the class will want to be involved and she is thinking about going to the Mod.
[Dianne Stafford] I have an interest in Gaelic songs and I started a wee choir in Stranraer a month or two ago. The Mod will be in Paisley this year and I would like to go with the choir.
[Caitriana Deeprose - Reporter] Certainly, a member of the class welcomes the news and thinks that the choir will be good for Gaelic in the area.
[Jeanette Rodgers] I would be really pleased to see it as there has been many a day and night that I have said to myself that I wish I was in Edinburgh, or Glasgow and it would be good to see a choir.
[Mary Kiely] Who would have thought that this would have happened two years ago !We had no idea!
