Teaching resources for the Commonweath Games
[Iain MacLean – Presenter] Now there is only two or three months until the Commonwealth Games start with attention all over the world has turned to the sport and the countries that are taking part. Today, though a new Gaelic teaching resource was published. Both to raise awareness in the games themselves and, more importantly maybe, to develop their Gaelic skills at the same time. With more, here’s Alasdair Fraser.
[Alasdair Fraser– Reporter] Children from Taobh na Pàirce school a chance to see new Gaelic teaching resources, learning cards from Stòrlann with information about the about the different countries in the Commonwealth and about the different sports which will be in Glasgow in 2014.
[Donald “Ryno” Morrison] And they Commonwealth Games, it will be big and it will be on our laptops, and it will be on the television, and it’ll be in the papers and I think that it’s a good thing that there are Gaelic resources involved with that as it is Gaelic, as we see, that is the language in which children are being taught.
[Alasdair Fraser– Reporter] And in a short session which was held in Edinburgh, what they saw was enjoyed by the pupils and they learned them a thing or two.
[Boy] We were learning about what the sports and what the countries are in the Commonwealth Games and about the countries too.
[Boy 2] I learned lots about the different countries in the European Union and all over the world and Africa and many place.
[Girl] I learned about the countries and about the capital cities and about the language that they speak.
[Alasdair Fraser– Reporter] The Gaelic skills of the pupils are developed at the start of the project. And it is useful to make it as attractive as possible at the same time.
[Morag MacLean] By creating cards about the different sport, we give them the opportunity to learn a little, but we wanted to bring on their speaking skills and listening and understanding. That is the main aim of the cards that they will help their Gaelic skills.
[Alasdair Fraser– Reporter] The resources are available through cards, posters and online and Stòrlann see that there will be a requirement for them for a while yet.
[Donald “Ryno” Morrison] We have made this resource so that it will last. It will work in Modern Studies, geography. It will work with language and the resource will last a long time after the games have gone.
