Development of the Free Church in Dornoch
[Màiri Rodgers - Presenter] Now, a campaign has started to raise four hundred thousand pounds to restore the Dornoch Free Church. The church was built a short time after the split in eighteen forty three (1843). And, she now needs lots of work. From the start of next month, the congregation will worship in Dornoch Academy until the next part of the development is complete at the end of the year.
[Peter MacAulay - Reporter] The walls are as sturdy as they were when the church was built nearly two hundred years ago. The change has come from the outside world and the church must adapt to accordingly.
[Peter MacAulay - Reporter] The query that faces congregations far and wide today; the buildings are old, the resources and the machinery in them are old and needs a renewal. But all of that is going to cost a lot of money.
[Peter MacAulay - Reporter] There are about forty worshippers here on the Sabbath in a building in a building that can hold hundreds. The services will move up the stairs.
[Rev. Duncan MacLeod] There will be two floors. Downstairs, there will be room for different pursuits, multipurpose room, we are going to make a much bigger kitchen than what we have just now. We are going to make space where people can gather just to pass time together after the service, and that sort of thing. We are going to make rooms where the community can come together for different things. Maybe we’ll give out free tea and coffee, maybe to people, if they come in.
[Peter MacAulay - Reporter] The appearance of age can be seen on parts of the church today, even the floor is dangerous.
[Peter MacAulay - Reporter] Anyone who comes in to the building, they’ll see that this floor is not level, it’s not flat. And there are some who have fallen, maybe they’ve hurt themselves, we are just aware of how dangerous it is and how crucial it is to have one level.
[Peter MacAulay - Reporter] The wood is very beautiful and precious here. There is a market for it and this will bring in useful money.
