[Elspeth Turner] I went to hear a concert given by Julie Fowlis at the Carnegie Hall in Dunfermline, which is where I grew up. And she sang a song called A’ Bhean Eudach - The Jealous Woman. And I thought that this would make a great story for a play. So I started to write a play which explored how a family might reach that point of crisis. And the idea for the title came from conversations with my father., where the sort of children of a village would be allowed to sit on the interior wall of the crofthouse at the cèilidh and watch the proceedings and would also be accompanied by anyone in the village that was an adult perhaps with learning difficulties would sit there too and they were treated with such compassion in the Gàidhealtachd.

A bilingual play
[Innes Munro - Presenter] The bilingual play, The Idiot at the Wall, is on tour around the Highlands and Islands just now. The new drama is based at the end of the Second World War and deals with a family in the Westerns Isles and what happens when a member of the family gets a vision of the death of his sister. The rest of the story is with Allan MacLeod.
[Allan MacLeod – Reporter] The Idiot at the Wall started on tour this week all over the Highlands and Islands. The play was successful at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival last year. This story could take place in many areas of the Highlands and the actors hope that there will be a connection with the people to each area that they visit.
[Elspeth Turner] I went to hear a concert given by Julie Fowlis at the Carnegie Hall in Dunfermline, which is where I grew up. And she sang a song called A’ Bhean Eudach - The Jealous Woman. And I thought that this would make a great story for a play. So I started to write a play which explored how a family might reach that point of crisis. And the idea for the title came from conversations with my father, where the sort of children of a village would be allowed to sit on the interior wall of the crofthouse at the cèilidh and watch the proceedings and would also be accompanied by anyone in the village that was an adult perhaps with learning difficulties would sit there too and they were treated with such compassion in the Gàidhealtachd.
[Allan MacLeod – Reporter] As well as writing the play, Elspeth is also the main actress. She also set up the company which is putting the play on stage. The story tells of Elspeth’s character and her family after someone from London comes to visit the.
[Kenneth Lindsay] Her half-brother, Hugh, has the second sight and he sees Iain’s sister drowning and I don’t want that to happen at all. And as such I do everything to split up the sisters and keep them from each other. Just, I want everyone to be careful and alive.
[Allan MacLeòid – Reporter] The tour visits Bernaray tomorrow and Stornoway on Saturday and they will be returning to the mainland next week. Allan MacLeòid, BBC AN Là, Portree.
