[Colour Sargent Kevin Hunter] Although they call it the Queen’s Own Highlanders Collection, we think it should be called the Queen’s Own Highlanders Museum. We are the only regiment that do not have their own museum. The Gordons, the regiment we are amalgamated with in 94, they have their own museum in Aberdeen. We want them to rectify that. And there’s a lot of things in the museum we want changed. It’s got that appearance of an Officers’ Mess about it. We don’t like that, we would rather have exhibition rooms, more of the artefacts on display depicting the Queen’s Own Highlanders.

[Seumas Moireach] In August 2000, the name was changed to The Highlanders’ Museum (The Queen’s Own Highlanders’ Collection) and because that was agreed and accepted, we received MOD funding to the tune of two MOD staff a year, which is about £40,000 and that goes on until 2030 and obviously there were conditions with that and really we had to modernise so that we could get accreditation.

Soldiers from the Queen's Regiment present a petition
[Iain MacLean - Presenter] A group of former soldiers from the Queen’s Own Highlanders to Fort George today to hand over a petition against changing the name of the museum. The name was changed from Queen’s Own Highlanders Museum to The Highlanders’ Museum. There are more than 1,500 names on the petition.
[Calum MacLean – Reporter] Marching together at Fort George, former soldiers, their families and friends. The Queen’s Own Highlanders were formed on this very day 53 years ago.
[Calum MacLean – Reporter] Many from the regiment came together today and they want to reinstate the old name of the museum.

[Private LachLinn Stewart] It’s a big blow. We have been hidden and our regiment only existed for 53 years. And in that time, 13 boys were killed for the regiment and for Britain. We did everything that they asked of us over the years, every one, we did everything they asked and more.
