The Isle of Dinosaurs
[Iain MacLean – Presenter] Now to some it’s the Misty Isle and for most, the Isle of Skye. But there are also some, Palaeontologists in particular, who refer to it as the Dinosaur Isle. The island is renowned for dinosaur fossils but there’s a warning to those who visit these sites that they may be causing harm. There is a scheme now though to protect them. Here’s Eilidh MacLeod.
[Eilidh MacLeod – Reporter] Walking where there were once dinosaurs. Thousands have come to Staffin since remains of the pre-historic creatures were discovered in the eighties.
[Dougie Ross] That’s a large dinosaur print and it was a Megalosaurus who left it. He would have been walking on the mud. I believe he’d have been looking for anything left on the shore, fish or whatever the tide left.
[Eilidh MacLeod – Reporter] With rocks three billion years old the island is a huge attraction to fossil collectors. It’s the one place in Scotland where dinosaurs have been found.
[Eilidh MacLeod – Reporter] Almost two hundred million years have passed since dinosaurs left these prints. But there is a danger that a creature of another sort will destroy the evidence that they were ever here.
[Eilidh MacLeod – Reporter] There are some who are careful and give what they find to the experts. But others have done damage to many sites by using hammers and sometimes even pneumatic drills.
[Dougie Ros] Their intention often is to sell the fossils, but other times the people who collect the fossils in that way often know what they are doing is against the law, the people who do it don’t care and it would be help if we could monitor the situation.
[Eilidh MacLeod – Reporter] They want people in the area to look after the sites and protect the international reputation of the area.
[Dr Neil Clark] It contains over ten per cent of the total number of types of dinosaurs worldwide and certainly over ten per cent as well or the number of sights from which dinosaurs have been found.
[Eilidh MacLeod – Reporter] Despite the fears though evidence of dinosaurs can still be found, like this backbone a collector found this year.
