Sgoilearan Lìonacleit a' cuimhneachadh

Gaelic Gàidhlig

[Mairi Rodgers – Preseantair] Nis mar a thachair air feadh na dùthcha chaillear na ceudan de dhaoine à Eileanan Uibhist a dh’fhalbh dhan Chogadh Mhòr. Tha Pròiseact nan Ealan air taisbeanadh fhosgladh ann an Lìonacleit far an deach seirbheis cuimhneachaidh a chumail an-diugh fhèin. Tha an aithris seo aig Shona NicDhòmhnaill.

[Shona NicDhòmhnaill – Neach-aithris] Dhe na ceudan a dh’fhàg na h-eileanan eadar Beàrnaraigh agus Èirisgeigh airson a dhol dhan chiad Chogadh Mòr, chaillear trì cheud agus leth-cheud dhiubh. An-diugh, aig Sgoil Lìonacleit bhathar a’ cuimhneachadh orra uile.

[Caitriona NicCuthais] Na sgoilearan, tha iad a’ tuigsinn gur e daoine às an seo fhèin, gu robh iad ceangailte ris agus tha iad, cuideachd, i a’ faighinn a-mach gur e daoine a tha ‘s dòcha, anns an teaghlach aca fhèin. ‘S dòcha nach e seanair no ‘s dòcha gur e seann sheanair aca a bh’ ann ach tha sin a’ toirt barrachd buaidh tha mi smaoineachadh orra oir tha iad a’ faicinn gu bheil ceangal aca fhèin ri na h-uabhasan a bha tachairt.

[Shona NicDhòmhnaill – Neach-aithris] Chaidh ainm nam marbh uile a’ leughadh a-mach agus chaidh crois le gach ainm a chur dhan talamh.

[Amber] Bha mi smaointinn gu robh tòrr dhaoine a’ fàgail Uibhist agus cha robh mòran a’ tilleadh so bha tòrr a’ bàsachadh agus bha mi gu math duilich air an son, na teaghlaichean aca.

[Shona NicDhòmhnaill – Neach-aithris] A-nis a’ comharrachadh ceud bliadhna bho thòisich a’ Chiad Chogadh Mòr, tha taisbeanadh air fosgladh ann an taigh-tasgaidh na sgoile.

[Crìsdean] Fhuair mi a-mach gu robh na trainnsichean uabhasach grod agus fliuch agus gun do bhàsaich tòrr dhaoine le trench foot agus rudan mar sin.

[Shona NicDhòmhnaill – Neach-aithris] ‘S ciamar a tha sin gad fhàgail fhèin a’ faireachdainn?

[Crìsdean] Gu math doirbh a’ smaoineachadh mu dheidhinn ciamar a bhàsaich iad.

[Shona NicDhòmhnaill – Neach-aithris] Thug pìobaire gu crìoch an t-seirbheis a’ cuimhneachadh an taic a thug pìobairean dha na bha sabaid anns a’ Chogadh. Shona NicDhòmhnaill, BBC An Là, Beinn na Faoghla.

Liniclate School remember

English Beurla

[Mairi Rodgers - Presenter] Like in other parts of the country, hundreds of people lives from the Uists were lost in the First World War. The Gaelic Arts Agency opened an exhibition in Liniclete where a remembrance service was held today. This report comes from Shona MacDonald.

[Shona MacDonald – Reporter] Out of the hundreds who left the islands from Berneray to Eriskay to go to the First World War, three hundred and fifty were lost. They were all remembered today at Liniclate School.

[Caitriona MacCuish] The pupils understand that these people were from here, that they were connected to the place itself and they have also been finding out that some were even related to them. Perhaps not a Grandfather or indeed Great Grandfather but I think it’s had more of an effect on them as they’ve discovered they have a connection themselves to the tragedies that occurred.

[Shona MacDonald – Reporter] A list of the deceased were read out and a cross with each name was put into the ground.

[Amber] I know a lot of people left Uist and many didn’t return as they were killed and I was very sorry for them and their families.

[Shona MacDonald – Reporter] Commemorating one hundred years since the First World War started, an exhibition has opened in the school museum.

[Christopher] I found out that the tranches were horrible and wet and lots of people died from things like trench foot.

[Shona MacDonald – Reporter] And how does that make you feel?

[Christopher] It’s hard when you think about how they died.

[Shona MacDonald – Reporter] A piper brought the service to an end to mark the encouragement pipers gave to those fighting the war. Shona MacDonald, BBC An Là, Benbecula.
