We’ve made various different jobs for other pupils, such as picking up litter and organising sub-teams to do that and making sure the maintenance of the train station is always kept to a high standard.

Plockton railway station
[Iain MacLean – Presenter] Now, we heard a wee bit earlier about the situation at Plockton Railway station. We will find out more now because many in the town wanted the schoolchildren completely banned from the train station and there were concerns that they were leaving rubbish there, but the pupils have found an peculiar solution to the problem and they are themselves taking responsibility to keep the place in order. Eilidh MacLeod reports.
[Eilidh MacLeod – Reporter] The beauty of Plockton attracts many tourists. However, it is a worry to many in the area that the views they get, when they step off the train, are not as beautiful as they were expecting.
[Pupil] One or two were coming down at breaktime and smoking and things like that, so it was not so good for the school or for the station.
[Eilidh MacLeod – Reporter] Instead of banning the children, for the actions of a few of them, the pupils are now taking responsibility for the are, with help from First Scotrail and the British Transport Police.
[Pupil] A man came from Inverness and said that he wanted to set a committee up and a group of pupils came together and started to make plans to make sure that the station looks good and to create a tight link between the school and community.
[Eilidh MacLeod – Reporter] The children will get money from the rail company for new plants. It is part of a new scheme where communities will get money for putting abandoned stations to use. In Plockton, the building is used already as a guest house, and the children will be looking after the platform. More than twenty of them are involved.
[Pupil] Basically it’s run by the pupils, so I have to organise all the pupils to know what they are doing. We’ve split it up into a committee. Obviously, it’s got all the jobs, secretary, deputy chair, all those jobs.
