[Struan Stevenson] It doesn’t reduce CO2 emissions. It drives up electricity prices. It drives people out of the tourist industry. It’s the new Highland Clearances, if you like. And this time, it’s not to replace people with sheep; it’s to replace people and tourist industries with giant, useless wind turbines.

The Skye Book Festival
[Iain MacInnes - Presenter] Now, those who are behind the Skye Book Festival aim to have one of the best on Scotland. The second festival came to an end at the weekend and our Eilidh MacLeod went to get a taste of what was happening.
[Eilidh MacLeod – Reporter] Mairi Hedderwick wrote more than ten stories about the little girl, Katie Morag. But, although it was a disappointment to some who are still enthralled by her, the author said that she will not write anything else about her.
[Mairi Hedderwick] I’m tired of, well, her a little bit and I want to explore other kinds of writing. So tonight, it’s very nice of the organisers here of the Skye Festival, they have offered me a slot with the adult books.
[Eilidh MacLeod – Reporter] The writer was pleased as she got a copy of an old travel book from the Victorian age that she had lost, at a sale of old books that was happening at the same time as the festival. She was not the only person who left the sale pleased.
[Donald Henderson] There is something about Scotland just now, everyone is just … you will see the people coming in here – every kingdom, Italian, who you saw just then buying things and Scotland is just on the map. I don’t know if politics that is doing this, but there is something.
[Eilidh MacLeod – Reporter] Norman MacDonald welcoming the Member of the European Parliament, Struan Stevenson. The subject of his book is asking difficult questions about the renewable energy industry. But what would he say to the community that gets a profit from windfarms.
[Struan Stevenson] It doesn’t reduce CO2 emissions. It drives up electricity prices. It drives people out of the tourist industry. It’s the new Highland Clearances, if you like. And this time, it’s not to replace people with sheep; it’s to replace people and tourist industries with giant, useless wind turbines.
[Eilidh MacLeod – Reporter] In spite of the breadth of topics, there was not a large turnout on Saturday. A disappointment to the people who set up the exhibition and unlike many other events where there was a good crowd. But they have enough confidence about the festival’s future image.
[Donald MacDonald] It’s just the environment and the views move people to poetry and for them to put pen to paper and I think that a festival of this type should be in the Isle of Skye. This festival is in its second year. It is still very young. We would hope that year on year that it will grow and it will gain a reputation all over the country as one of the best festivals in Scotland.
