Concern about the Post Office in Creagorry
[Iain MacLean - Presenter] That’s the answer about the fire and the sports still to come on An Là. Before then, though, a question has arisen about the destiny in Creagorry in Benbecula. The people who run the service, David and Evelyn Thorington want to retire. But, they have failed to sell the connected business up to now. There is a danger now that the post office will be lost and the people of the area will have to travel a distance. Reporting from Uist, here’s Shona Macdonald.
[Shona Macdonald – Reporter] David and Evelyn Thorington who run the post office service in Creagorry want to leave their jobs. But, they are having difficulty getting consent from the Post Office to base the service in another place in the area. A shop about one mile away from them are willing to take the service, but up to now, the post office have refused. Here’s Dolly Hoggs from Lovats
[Dolly Hoggs] The Post Office came to us to take it and we said that we would take it as we don’t want to lose it. And we filled in the forms, we did everything and then we received notice that it was stopping, that we would not get it at all as we were too far away from the Post Office that was shutting down.
[Shona Macdonald – Reporter] If the Post Office closes in Creagorry, the full-time services closest would be over six miles north in Balivanich, or about twenty miles south in Daliburgh.
[Shona Macdonald – Reporter] The office is used by many on the road to work and it opens early. It is close to many businesses, hotels and schools, as such, David and Evelyn don’t want to give up the office until they are sure that this service is close by and they recognise how critical that the full-time service is to many people and to a business like Hebridean Jewellery, as Mary-Anne Macdonald told me.
[Mary-Anne Macdonald] It would be very sad if the Creagorry Post Office closed as we would have to go to Balivanich, that’s the next post office close to us, so it would take us an hour for someone, one of our employees to go.
[Shona Macdonald – Reporter] Lovats have set up a petition and they aim to get the community’s support to put pressure on the Post Office, who said that they are still advertising the Office as a business opportunity and they hope to settle the matter. Shona Macdonald, BBC An Là, Uist.
