A mix of concerns and anticipation amongst new University students
[Donald Morrison – Presenter] 21% of young people in Scotland beginning University courses this year intend to find employment through the university term. That’s the highest percentage in the whole of Britain. These figures are according to new research conducted to give an insight into the aims and concerns of new students. With more, here’s Kerr Gibb.
[Kerr Gibb – Reporter] It won’t be long until the silence is broken. In a month, universities across the country will be buzzing with fresher weeks happening. But how are those coming to university feeling about it? What brought them there and what kind of life will they have?
[[Kerr Gibb – Reporter] Research was done on young people between 16-19 going to university this year. Most hope to earn money at some stage throughout the year, with 21% in Scotland hoping to be working during term time. 2/3 said that they chose their own course subject, with 15% admitting that their parents had an effect on their decision and only 4% saying that a teacher had an effect on their choice. A relatively large number of new students are worried they’ll be lonely. And around half chose their mobile phone as one thing they couldn’t go without. 10% in Scotland said they couldn’t cook at all and a teddy with be going along with 5% of them. Isabelle Bain is on a work placement at the moment before she goes to Glasgow University. But what exactly is driving her to go?
[[Isabelle Bain] Tha main reason is to get a good career at the end of the day but everyone says that going to university is a lot of fun and I want to go to find that out for myself too.
[[Kerr Gibb – Reporter] Like almost half of new students, neither Isebelle nor Catriona Rennie, who is bound for Edinburgh University, are against working during term time when they go to university.
[[Catriona Rennie] If I can get work related to my course I think it would help, greatly, especially with the kind of course I am doing. But I think it’s difficult for other people to do that sometimes so they take any job just so they can get a bit of money.
[[Kerr Gibb – Reporter] The Glasgow University Students Representative Council are there to support students in various ways, from a helpline through the night to their centre in the middle of the campus where students can get advice.
