Lorn community build a St Ayles skiff
[Màiri Rodgers – Preseantair] A small group in the district of Lorn will soon be looking for a new home for the new wooden boat they are building. Like a number of other groups across Scotland, the Lorn community have built a St Ayles skiff and they aim now to take part in races, if they can find a new shed for it first. Andreas Wolff has this report.
[Andreas Wolff – Reporter] A small group in Barcaldine are currently building a skiff. They had no knowledge of the business before this. They began building her last year.
[James MacDonald] Oh well we had hoped to have her finished a long time ago but it’s not happened yet. There’s not much to do, as you can see the rower’s benches have gone in, it needs a little tidy up, glued together and then it needs painted. You can see we need to cut the front and back stern posts, there’s not much in that. Then paint it and make the oars too.
[Andreas Wolff – Reporter] There are groups across Scotland building skiffs like this and they buy the supplies they require from a company in Fife. They prepare the pieces of wood needed to build the boat and the group assembles it. Here, in Barcaldine, they don’t have long to go.
[James MacDonald] I think there’s a lot more than 50 of them currently around Scotland and there are 14 or 15 being built just now. I was speaking to a man recently who thought they would begin building one in Taynuilt.
[James MacDonald] This here is the rudder Andreas, this is the one part of boat that is complete.
[Andreas Wolff – Reporter] But they now need to find here a new home for her.
[James MacDonald] This place was recently sold and those who bought it are taking it over. Everyone needs to be out of here at the end of the month. Therefore, we need to find a corner somewhere where we can put her in order to get her finished.
[Andreas Wolff – Reporter] That’s not far away now and certainly, there are rowing competitions between the teams too. Andreas Wolff, BBC An Là in Barcaldine.
