UI UI

Let's take a look at how to pronounce the vowels ui in Gaelic.

Ui is yet another sound that has both a long and short form. The short ui sound, without a grave accent, can be heard in the instruction cuir (put) and in duilich (sad):

ui

cuir

put / place / give

cuir thugam e

give it to me

duilich

sad

duine duilich

a sad man

If the u has a grave accent, then ùi is pronounced differently, which can be heard in dùisg (awaken):

ùi

dùisg

awaken

dùisg a-nis

wake up now
